It's almost a shame how fast AWS improve/change, because that pace will eventually obsolete what is an excellent introduction to the subject. This book is very well written and the examples just work. Grab this book, sign up for a free account, and you'll learn a lot.
Good, solid actionable advice in this AWS book. I appreciated the sections on cost containment efficiencies, and delegations of admin powers. Also, I liked their evaluation of the differing levels of "vendor lock-in" associated with several areas where there were multiple options available. But I must dock one star for the utter lack of any mention of Docker or Kubernetes. It is a thin enough book that even if they didn't know much about it, they could have at least summarized why why decided against it, then they should have invited a guest writer to do that chapter in service of these very popular concepts.
I hoped that this would be a Rosetta Stone for understanding the terrible AWS online documentation. Maybe that was the case at some point in the past. But Amazon has marched so far along that the walkthroughs no longer felt thorough or helpful. Useful to glean just what are newer features of AWS, but at this point, seems that time is better just spent with Amazon’s docs than trying to figure out what’s different between the book and what you actually see on screen.
This is an excellent tutorial for learning Amazon Web Services. I have used Microsoft Azure before but not AWS and was looking learn AWS also. The book was written at the right level for me. It has many excellent diagrams and lots of screenshots of where to click. When configuration settings are shown there are arrows pointing and explaining what the file does. I got a good sense of where to go with the project I want to put on AWS.Examples in the book tended to use common software. For example, when describing SDKs they choose JavaScript/Node, but mentioned there are other languages as well. For Content Management Systems, they used Wordpress. Best practices are described often, and I think the authors know the material well. There were a few minor drawbacks to this book. The writing style is rather dry; it is written in tutorial fashion. Also, I noticed 3 typos while reading and I think the book can use some additional polishing. This was not enough for me to rate the book 4 stars though as the content is very good, and this is the first substantial book on AWS available. If you are looking to learn AWS or expand your knowledge of your existing AWS setup this book is a solid choice.
Nice! Walks you through AWS in a cut-the-crap fashion, very hands on. For a complete newbie, this books spares your eyes from going through tons of AWS online docs (which are great, don't get me wrong), and also gives you a structure to get started. Last but not least, you can tell the authors did go through quite a few pitfalls, so you really get some good advice on how to avoid the most common ones.A+
Decent effort since systematic text on AWS are so few. But does not help with standing up/scaling services from scratch. Someone really needs to put together some well-organized documentations on the nitty-gritty details.
It was a good introduction but wish it was updated
