I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it is a good introduction to the concepts but lacks the practical applications that non-financial managers need to retain the concepts.I was first exposed to this book when I was in graduate school (that's a testimonial in itself). A few years later, I loaned it to my then-boss: a director of a multi-site program with the Vermont Department of Corrections. My boss was clueless about financial reports and this book proved invaluable. So valuable that I never got it back. That's OK --this is a great primer for understanding business financial concepts and financial reporting. So, when a business coaching client needed to get off the ground with regard to financial concepts this book was a natural choice. I purchased a copy for him so that I could tutor him on the concepts as part of our coaching collaboration. I was pleased to see that the text is available for the Kindle. Outstanding (even though the pages in the Kindle edition don't synch with the paperback edition -- tough to follow along with each other -- but that's a Kindle issue and not an issue about the text itself).I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to get a better handle on business financial reporting, business financial analysis. It is a short text. It is a dense text. There are not many examples nor stories to illustrate the concepts. The technician-turned-business-owner may find that they are falling asleep at night if they read it in bed. After you have read through this book a great follow up is Financial Statement Analysis: A Practitioner's Guide (Wiley Finance) along with the Financial Statement Analysis Workbook: Step-by-Step Exercises and Tests to Help You Master Financial Statement Analysis (Wiley Finance) that you can get to supplement the text.It fills in the missing component of Fields' text: application. You will get a lot of information from The Essentials of Finance and Accounting for Nonfinancial Managers -- but very little application. Now if there was a companion workbook for this text rife with examples and exercises to insure that the reader wouldn't just get a soon-to-forget information overload, then I would give the package 5 stars.
using this as a tool for my non-finance managers to explain some concepts. Easy to understand and a breeze!
So so, bought for textbook, but I would not recommend for personal readingIt is entry level finance, and little bit tedious for meAlthough I learnt something, but..em....try something else
I guess it is good. Learned some new stuff, it got sometimes boring but i guess it is the topic itself. I would recommend it.
Really enjoyed this book. The breakout of sections, appendix tables, definitions, and then written practice excercises. I do wish there was a way to print the excercises from my Kindle downloaded version that I could leverage for building and identifying the various balance sheet and income st ate meant components.
It's informative but not what I expected. I wanted to learn about how an organization is setup etc.
Excellent book written from a business perspective. Builds up well from the fundamentals then an end to end analysis for a given Co to aid understanding. Very good refresher for most non-finance business leaders.
If you are new to finance, budgeting, accounting, and management as I was, this book will help explain key terms in a way that is easy to understand. Some of my fave quotes: "Accounting is conservative. It requires that the least favorable interpretation of events be presented", and "Business is risky and filled with uncertainty. Accounting is risk-averse."
